AFSCME Florida Statement on Recertification Win in Town of Surfside

“John Passidomo was an accomplished attorney, a civic leader and guiding light to Senate President Kathleen Passidomo and their entire family.

The last few years have seen a rise in worker momentum, with unionized workers raising their voices to demand higher pay, safer working conditions and more.

The damage left behind by several powerful tornadoes that ripped through northwestern Florida back in January are a reminder that, in the hands of Mother Nature, the structures we build to protect ourselves are as frail as children’s toys.

AFSCME President Lee Saunders praised the White House’s announcement Thursday that the Biden administration will forgive student loans for an additional 78,000 borrowers — including many AFSCME members — under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

AFSCME President Lee Saunders congratulated Nicole Berner, a longtime labor lawyer and general counsel of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), on being confirmed to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Today the hardworking men and women represented by AFSCME in the City of Opa-locka voted almost 98% in favor of recertifying their union. AFSCME Local 2068, representing the public service workers for the city will continue to ensure these dedicated workers have a protected voice in the services they deliver.

Pinellas Park – Yesterday, the hardworking men and women represented by AFSCME in the City of Pinellas Park voted unanimously to recertify their union. AFSCME Local 762, representing the public service workers for the City, and AFSCME Local 762A, representing the Pinellas Park Water Management District, will continue to ensure these dedicated workers have a protected voice in the services they deliver.

In this year’s State of the Union speech, President Joe Biden highlighted his administration’s achievements over the past three years and vowed to continue fighting for working people.

AFSCME applauds his accomplishments and strongly supports the Biden-Harris administration’s vision for the future, which includes defending our nation’s democracy, protecting a woman’s right to choose and making the wealthy pay their fair share in taxes, among other things.
